Rod Fournier, Senior Premier Field Engineer, Microsoft

First of all thanks for your interest in what makes me tick, I hope you like what you read. In all honesty, there really is not much to say, though I do talk all the time in person. I am certifiably crazy, I mean nuts ? luckily to date the authorities have not caught up with me and put me away. I love computers; that is all I do and know. I?have been working in the field for over 25 years now (I am 44 years old, so yes my whole Adult life). I eat and breathe computers. I am boring as hell at a party. I can?t discuss politics, religion, current affairs, etc. I think in hex, I tell binary and clustering jokes, I see the world as a bunch of sites yet to be configured. I am pretty much a geek full time. During the business day I am a Senior Premier Field Engineer for Microsoft. My focus is on Windows Server 2003/8 Active Directory services, Clustering technologies, Exchange 2003/7, and infrastructure design. I truly love my job and what I do for Microsoft; it?s a great place to work. A true geek?s dream come true. They are an excellent company to work for, top self! Bottom line, if you are a recruiter looking to hire someone, I am not interested ? please leave me alone. In my spare time, I own and run Net Working America, Inc. ( I am the President and lead consultant (currently the only one too).? I do lots of technical editing, authoring of books, publications, training courses (including Microsoft Official Curriculum as a subject matter expert and author), and public speaking.? I have been a Microsoft Certified Trainer for the past 13 years. I just love to speak in public (or even to myself for that matter). I have also been a source of information in many articles written by other authors and have been quoted in the industry press on many different topics regarding IT (basically I will talk to anyone at any time about computer ? I always have something to say).

Cracking Open Kerberos: Understanding How Active Directory Knows Who You Are

When used for simple authentication, then Active Directory's authenticator-of-choice Kerberos is trouble-free: set up an AD, Kerberos just works and that's it. But start to add AD-aware servers and services, or try to understand how a read-only domain controller differs from a full DC, and suddenly there's a LOT to know. Ticket granting tickets, pre-authenticators, and session keys are just the start. But what's this about "delegation," or, in Windows Server 2008, "CONSTRAINED delegation"--is it only permissible between consenting adults? And what's an "SPN," the thing that the invaluable "setspn" utility assists with? Once past that, you may find that some of your users seem to be logged onto AD but aren't really, due to the frightening-sounding "token bloat."

12 Tips to Secure Your Windows Systems: How Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, and Windows 7 Change the Game

Are you a security professional?? "No," you say? Think again. Security is a must for networks, and has been at least since 2001 brought us Code Red and Nimda, so the sad truth is that every admin--not just security specialists--must know all of the "you gotta's" of security. Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2 introduce some radical "game-changers" to the security business. Join Rod for a quick look both at Windows security paradigms (and you know what they say about paradigms--"shift happens"), how the post-2006 members of the Windows family shake things up, and what you can do to secure your network without spending a dime.
