Melanie Nelson, Business Development & Technology Solutions Manager, Tait Environmental Services

Melanie Nelson, Business Development & Technology Solutions Manager, Tait Environmental Services

Melanie Nelson is from Dallas, Texas, a graduate of the esteemed SMU COX School of Business. Her background in banking, investment-banking, filmmaking, retail banking and mortgage banking led her to business and IT consulting. A long-term consulting role led to gaining environmental expertise and working at TAIT. That history, plus her real estate and photography entrepreneurial ventures hint at her varied interests and clearly show her intense devotion to and actual love of business. (<-- not politics)

"The environmental consulting portion of TAIT I am most involved in centers around on petroleum storage tank regulations, which are having major changes. My role is developing the compliance SharePoint data system we use, and it feels good to have such a focus on the environment. Photography is a creative outlet that is heart-warming as it is a huge confidence booster for anyone we work with. It is great to work alongside my husband in our photography and IT businesses."

Melanie is a very motivated and self-driven woman with a positive attitude. She is always willing to help when she can and loves to share ideas and brainstorm on your projects. She is a self-described "SharePoint Optimist ;) I love SP because it's Business Strategy and I love brainstorming building businesses. Idea machine, right here."

So You Want to Run Your Own Business

You've decided you want to run your own business. You've done some research (maybe) and now it's time to get started. What are some of the things you should consider? I'll discuss: * business plans - when you need one and when you don't * the importance of having insurance * personalities for running a business, being a partner v. working alone * working your business - importance of responding to clients and working with others * Q&A - share your business ideas and scenarios for candid feedback and questioning to help you determine whether and how to begin your business This session is intended for people that are considering starting a business. We will not get into detail on legal issues, tax implications etc. for established businesses.

They Assigned Me SharePoint - Now What?

Someone assigned you to work with SharePoint. You have little to no idea what the role is going to entail or how you are going to get started. Maybe someone left the company, or the company downsized, but for whatever reason, the company's SharePoint has been assigned to you - and you have to figure out what's next. I'm going to introduce you to the SharePoint community and point you to resources to use. There will be time to ask questions and find a specific direction for you personally - referring you to an individual or to a group of terms to research, books I've liked, etc. This session is to help you take that next step. Sometimes it can be daunting, but with the support of the Community, we'll get you started on the new path that I hope you'll really enjoy :)
