Cross Platform with ASP.NET Core

Speaker(s): Myke Bates

Building on the momentum from the last year, ASP.NET 5 has now become ASP.NET Core and it is breathing new life into the .NET web development ecosystem. The platform has evolved greatly over the past year and is currently versioned at RC2 with a 1.0 release slated for later this summer. Of the many features, easily the most exciting is that web developers will be able to develop and deploy .NET applications on Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems. This alone could have a lasting impact on the web development community as a whole. In this session we will get an overview of the big changes to ASP.NET, learn how to setup a development environment on Mac OS(Linux will mirror closely to this) and get a glimpse of developing with the new lightweight Visual Studio Code editor. Attendees will leave this session armed with the knowledge necessary to start developing ASP.NET applications on the operating system of their choice.

Diving Into the Core

Speaker(s): Matthew Reily

.NET Core is a general purpose development platform maintained by Microsoft and the .NET community on GitHub. It is cross-platform, supporting Windows, macOS and Linux, and can be used in device, cloud, and embedded/IoT scenarios.

This will be a guided tour that starts with the .NET Core and answers the why, how, and what. We will discuss how it fits in the overall ecosystem and touch on some of the application models that have been built on top of it.

We will then build a simple .NET Core application and explore the new dotnet cli. We will also cover adding unit tests and running our application from the command line. After our code is written and tested we will add it to a remote repository and explore how easy it is to build and run on other operating systems.

Building Single Page Apps with Aurelia and ASP.NET Core

Speaker(s): Brian Sullivan

These days, the SPA framework space is crowded. Aurelia stands out from its contemporaries in a few important ways. Creating components using vanilla Javascript classes, leveraging convention to minimize development overhead, and future-proofing for upcoming technologies like Web Components are just a few of the advantages Aurelia offers. Come see how you can easily use Aurelia to create great single-page apps backed by the latest ASP.NET backend. We'll cover data binding, templating, dependency injection, custom HTML elements, and more.

Write Code For The Future You

Speaker(s): Paul Gower

How many jobs will you have before you retire? A typical worker in the United States switches jobs every 4-5 years; in the tech industry stays are even shorter. Due to this software developers are guaranteed both to work on someone else's code and someone will work on our code. To survive, it is critical you continue to add value by improving the quality of the code you write and/or maintain in your job as a software developer. In this session, we will define what it means to improve the quality of the code and give you practical steps towards improving it every day.
