Aaron Blythe, Senior Automation and Release Engineer, Hearst Business Media

Aaron Blythe has worked in Software for over a decade. He is currently a Sr. Automation and Release Engineer at Hearst Business Media. He is genuinely curious and interested in understanding things and making them better. Aaron went to college at both the University of Illinois and Griffith University in Australia. While in Australia he mostly skipped classes to surf. Aaron loves observing how people interact within the software process and modeling those interactions in search of improvements. He is constantly experimenting with new ways of interacting both in person and with technology. He has created software for over 20 years. Aaron is the lead organizer of the Kansas City DevOps Meetup and the DevOpsDayKC conference.

Voice Controlled ChatOps for the Remote Worker

So you have seen Tony Stark (Iron Man) talk to his computer J.A.R.V.I.S. (Just A Rather Very Intelligent System), right? Voice controlled ChatOps is pretty much like talking to J.A.R.V.I.S. It is a much more natural interface than keyboard and mouse. You talk to the hardware (Alexa/Raspberry Pi) and it sends the commands off through the Amazon Skills Kit (ASK) to Amazon Lambda. From here it makes it to the chat room, where Hubot takes over and integrates to the rest of the operations tool chain (PagerDuty, New Relic, deployment, etc.).

Trust, Just Culture and Blameless Post Mortems

Building a Just Culture has to be intentional and on-going. This talk will use fictional examples of a team to weave a story displaying how the difference of a Just vs. an Unjust culture can yield very different results.What is it to have a Just Culture? What is a mistake? What is a incompetence and malevolence? Who decides?I will go through a few fictional parallel stories of a software development team and the decisions they make. The same people with extraordinary talent can have very different outcomes. I assume we all want to have a strong learning culture, and the reasons we don?t are simple. Ways to overcome from many of our failures to create a just culture can be found from the teachings of Sidney Dekker on Just Culture.A learning culture is one that can be collectively reflective and honest with one another. Holding regular postmortems can greatly raise the knowledge and morale of the team if done properly.
